How will Eco Design 2022 Regulations affect me?

With misleading information and sensationalised headlines filling the media regarding the future of the wood burning stove industry, it is becoming increasingly confusing for our customers to separate the facts from the fake news…

Put simply, in a bid to further reduce the impact heating appliances have on our environment, the bodies that govern our industry (DEFRA, Stove Industry Alliance and HETAS) have introduced stricter guidelines concerning efficiency levels and particulate matter by which a multitude of appliances manufactured after 1st January 2022 and sold in the UK (and Ireland) must adhere. These will be known as Eco Design 2022 Ready.

The primary areas of focus for the Eco Design directive are reduced particle emissions, lower Carbon Monoxide emissions and improved efficiency levels through better fuel standards and sustainability. Local councils will also be handed greater power to enforce the Eco Design Ready Scheme in their region.

Will my existing stove be legal after 2022?

Assuming you are a responsible stove owner with a HETAS certificate and using only fully-seasoned approved fuels, then you will not be affected by the new regulations as it will only concern stoves manufactured (and subsequently, purchased) after 1st January 2022.

You may wish to consider improving your existing stove however with the installation of an electrostatic filter (pulls the particles from the exhaust fumes before emitting into the atmosphere), using wood approved by Ready to Burn and ensuring you book in a minimum of two chimney sweeps a year.

Why should I consider an EcoDesign 2022 Ready stove today?

What can be better than making a difference now and start personally contributing to a proposed reduction in UK carbon emissions by two million tonnes per year? By purchasing an Eco Design Ready stove, you unlock the full potential of a modern, highly-efficient wood burner which could slash your particulate emissions by up to 84% vs your existing stove (SIA research), cut fuel costs and reduce your carbon footprint on the planet whilst continuing to enjoy all the benefits you love from your woodburning stove. You can even dispose of your old stove responsibly through the nationwide Stove Scrappage Scheme.

As a HETAS approved and environmentally aware stove retailer, here at Glowing Embers we will always promote the correct operation of wood burners in conjunction with approved fuels to ensure complete adherence to all current DEFRA, HETAS and government regulations and guidelines and fully embrace the Eco Design 2022 Ready initiative. Ignoring the sensationalised and false headlines that all stoves are to be banned, the new limits on emissions align our products with the world we exist in today and permits us all to continue enjoying the back to basics tradition of solid fuel heating appliances, responsibly.

We would like to purchase a wood burning stove which is double sided for installation in a chimney which currently has a Firemaster fire installed. We would like it to comply with future regulations and would like it installed by a specialist. The fire aperture is 600 wide x 650 high . We are based in Burford Oxfordshire. Is this something you can help with ? Would you be able to provide us with approved installers to approach ?

Unfortunately, currently we do not stock any double sided Eco-Design Ready stoves. However, I can assure you that over the next few months you will see a larger selection of Eco-Design Ready Stoves hitting the market. The new legislation, Eco Design 2022 regulations, will take effect as of January 2022. However, any stove purchased now will still be legal when the new regulations come into force as they only concern stoves manufactured after that date. The link below will take you to the results of a Stove Search for double sided models that would fit within your aperture: https://bit.ly/2U8dIEO

How can I tell which of your stoves are Ecco Design Ready – is this the DEFRA rating? Many thanks, Sarah Squires

Hi.If I buy a non Ecodesign stove in 2021 can be installed in 2022?

The EcoDesign initiative restricts the manufacture of non-compliant stoves. This will not affect the installation of non-compliant models for a while if ever.

I have a Clearview woodburner, with grill. I would like to put a flat stone on the grill as I burn only wood. Is this possible? If so, can you supply one and at what price? Size would be approx. 330mm x 230mm but I can a piece down anyway.

I’m afraid we do not supply flat stone for this purpose but if this is an official Clearview spare part or accessory, please contact the sales team at [email protected] with the part number for this and they will be able to price this up and check availability.

I have a used (good condition) Clearview 400, which I’d like to install. This is a similar question to the one above – can it be installed and signed off in 2022 (given it is not EcoDesign ready)? I was advised by a stove installer today that they would not be able to sign this off due to the changes in policy. Many thanks

When it comes to EcoDesign stoves in 2022, the first regulation is to ban the manufacture of non-compliant models only. Afetr that, the selling of these will be banned and then eventually the installation. So for now, you are legally fine to install your Clearview 400, you may just find some installers reluctant to do so as they A) may only wish to deal in EcoDesign 2022 Ready burners or B) are unclear on the actual changes in legislation.

Hi, Would it be legal to install an older second hand stove that did not meet ecodesign regulations in a home setting? Thanks.

Yes you can still have a stove installed that is not eco design ready. The only regulation that would need to be adhered to is, if you live in a smokeless zone your stove must meet DEFRA regulations
