Building Regulations

Wood burning stove installations fall under legal Building Regulations and all installations must meet these requirements. All installations must be signed off either by your local council or by a HETAS registered engineer.

This current edition of Approved Document J (Combustion appliances and fuel storage systems), has been updated and replaces the previous 2010 edition.

It incorporates amendments made to reflect any changes arising as a result of the Building Regulations 2010. The changes mainly reflect regulation number changes as a result of re-ordering. There have been no amendments to the substantive requirements in Schedule 1 (ie Parts A to P) of the Building Regulations.

We have quite a few option os burners that would fit in your opening (link below for you) but if you visit our Stove Search, you can whittle these down using any number of other search criteria such as KW output, budget and design. https://www.glowing-embers.co.uk/index.php?main_page=stove_search_result&keyword=%25&search_in_description=0&pfrom=%C2%A30&pto=%C2%A35000&outputfrom=0&outputto=30&manufacturers_id=&outputwaterfrom=0&outputwaterto=23&outputroomfrom=0&outputroomto=10&radiatorsfrom=0&radiatorsto=19&external_height_from=0&external_height_to=750&external_width_from=0&external_width_to=500&external_depth_from=0&external_depth_to=1100&fire_box_height_from=0&fire_box_height_to=800&fire_box_width_from=0&fire_box_width_to=900&fire_box_depth_from=0&fire_box_depth_to=400&distance_to_combustibles=1500&distance_to_non_combustibles=1500&weightfrom=0&weightto=400&max-log-length=850&distance_rear_outletfrom=0&distance_rear_outletto=800&distance_top_outletfrom=0&distance_top_outletto=1400&outlet_diameter_mmfrom=0&outlet_diameter_mmto=200&colour=any&efficiencyfrom=0&efficiencyto=99&heatable_areafrom=0&heatable_areato=600&consumptionfrom=0&consumptionto=303

Hi, I purchased the KRATKI JAS 7KW INSET WOOD BURNING STOVE – JAS/PF from you in Dec 2019. Can this stove be converted with a DEFRA smoke control kit? If it can which product would I need? Thanks in advance

I’m afraid there is no DEFRA conversion kit for Kratki stoves.

I bought a Stovak Brunel 1A in 2005 and now wish to re-install it in our new house. Will it still meet all building regulations?

Yes, the stove itself does not come under any building regulations. Assuming it is CE approved and has a data plate and/or certificate of conformity etc then it is simply a closed heating appliance. It is the flue and installation that fall under the building regs.

I am thinking of purchasing the Henley Druid 25kw wood burner. My installer says it does not comply with Defra or hetas requirements. Please clarify that the burner is compliant. Many thanks Phil Marshall

I can confirm the Henley Druid 25kw multifuel boiler stove is neither DEFRA nor HETAS approved. All DEFRA approved models will state as much in the technical specification on Glowing Embers or, you can filter through all our stoves by ‘DEFRA’ using our Stove Search facility or we have a dedicated DEFRA page here – https://www.glowing-embers.co.uk/log-burners/defra-approved
